Wearable Art

This December, contemporary artist Dennis Golding brings Wear Your Power to Coffs Harbour—a full-day wearable art workshop inviting participants to explore what happens when identity, personal stories and creativity become something you can literally wear.

Golding is a Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, installation, photography and wearable art, often exploring memory, identity, community and belonging. In Wear Your Power, that practice becomes collaborative, with participants invited to create personalised “super capes” that express their own stories, strength and sense of self.

Presented by Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance through Museums & Galleries of NSW, the full-day workshop at The Gallery will give participants the opportunity to work directly with Golding, experimenting with materials and ideas while exploring wearable art as a form of contemporary creative expression.

The project is open to LGBTQIA+ people aged 18 years and over, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people especially encouraged to apply. No previous art experience is required, making the workshop as much about discovering creative possibilities as developing an artwork.

And Wear Your Power doesn’t end when the workshop does.

The completed wearable artworks will move from the workshop into a professionally curated public exhibition at The Gallery, giving participants the opportunity to see their personal creative responses presented within a regional gallery setting. The progression from making to exhibiting is central to the project, turning individual stories into a collective contemporary art experience.

For Mid North Coast audiences, it’s a rare opportunity to experience Golding’s practice through participation rather than observation—and to see how art can create space for identity, storytelling and connection.
