Pull Back The Velvet Curtain
A glittering new underground speakeasy experience | After the sold-out success of Date Night, The Velvet Curtain Co. returns with something equally fabulous.
What: The Velvet Curtain
Where: The Coffs Harbour Conservatorium
When: 22 - 23 August
In collaboration with the Coffs Harbour Conservatorium, the company presents, for two shows only, an underground Prohibition-era speakeasy, bringing defiant sequins, live music and questionable alibis into one dangerously glamorous room.
Created by Vanessa Hunter and Rebecca Riches, The Velvet Curtain Co. is where musical fantasies are allowed to get slightly out of hand. The company gathers brilliant artists, gives them permission to be bold, playful and a little ridiculous, then invites the audience to enjoy what happens next.
Inspired by hidden bars, fearless women and colourful characters who thrived beyond the rules, the production slips from the smoky speakeasies of America’s Deep South to back-alley detours through Sydney’s notorious underworld, gathering songs of scandal, longing and defiance along the way.
The evening mixes warm rhythm with old-world glamour. It is a celebration of rebels, romantics and rule-breakers; the kind who understand that music is best enjoyed with a touch of danger.
Kate Freeman, Pablo Blitzer, Danny Stitt and Oliver Nelson join the mischief as special guests — arguably the finest Contraband in town.
Audiences can expect feathers, sparkle, smoky songs, sharp wit and the delicious feeling that they may have wandered into something they were not strictly supposed to know about.
Audiences are invited to attend a matinee, for those who prefer their scandals in daylight hours, or an evening performance for those ready to slip fully underground.
Guests are encouraged to frock up, freak out, and snap up their seats.
For two shows only, The Velvet Curtain Co. invites audiences underground: Aug 22 (evening) and Aug 23 (matinee) at the Coffs Harbour Conservatorium, next to Events Cinema.
